Le Carrosse d’or (dont le nom rend hommage au film de Jean Renoir) récompense un réalisateur pour les qualités de ses films, pour son audace et son intransigeance dans la mise en scène. Martin Scorsese né le 17 novembre 1942 à New York (États-Unis). Scorsese remporte en 2007, l’Oscar du meilleur réalisateur pour Les Infiltrés (The Departed) qui est également gratifié de ceux du meilleur film et de la meilleure adaptation. Auparavant, il obtient la Palme d’orau Festival de Cannes 1976 pour Taxi Driver ainsi que le Prix de la mise en scène cannois, en 1986 pour After Hours et le Lion d’argent à la Mostra de Venise 1990 pour Les Affranchis. Il est président du jury au Festival de Cannes 1998. En 2018, pour son 50e anniversaire et la 50ème édition de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, la Société des réalisateurs est fière de saluer un cinéaste d’exception qui a une une source d’inspiration intarissable. A cette occasion, une journée sera organisée avec Martin Scorsese à Cannes le 9 mai, avec la projection de « Mean Streets », Robert de Niro à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs en 1974; suivie d’un débat avec le cinéaste, puis de la remise du prix pendant la cérémonie d’ouverture de la Quinzaine des réalisateurs. Le monstre sacré du cinéma américain Martin Scorsese, 75 ans, recevra ce prix annuel décerné par la Société française des Réalisateurs de films. Depuis 2002, les cinéastes de la SRF distinguent ainsi un de leurs pairs à l’ouverture de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, section parallèle du Festival qui a dévoilée l’affiche de cette nouvelle édition.
