The Festival de Cannes 2011, 64th edition, takes place from May 11 to May 22, 2011. The master of ceremonies is Mélanie Laurent and the president of the jury is actor Robert De Niro.

On January 6, 2011, the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival announced that American actor Robert De Niro accepted their proposal to chair the jury of the 64th edition. This choice is a tribute to the co-founder of the TriBeCa Festival, who is organizing its 10th edition that same year. With regard to his future role, he then states: « Having twice been jury president in the 1980s, I know that this will not be an easy task for my jurors and myself, but I am honored and happy with the role entrusted to me by the Cannes Film Festival. ».

31 January 2011, the French Cinematheque announces that a restored version of Stanley Kubrick's Mechanical Orange will be screened as a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. On February 2, 2011, an official press release announced Woody Allen's selection of Minuit in Paris as an opening film. For the second time since Robin des Bois in 2010, spectators will be able, in the equipped rooms, to watch the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival followed by the film.

The comments of filmmaker Lars von Trier on the Nazi regime caused a stir during the festival.
4 March 2011Gilles Jacob announces on the plateau of Canal+'s Grand Journal that the French actress Mélanie Laurent will be the ceremonial mistress during the opening and closing of the 64th edition of the Festival. 30 March 2011Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux announce that the festival will host a tribute to actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, including the screening of the film Belmondo route by Vincent Perrot and Jeff Domenech in the presence of the actor. On April 11, 2011, the award of a Palme d'honneur to Bernardo Bertolucci was announced on the Festival website. While the Palme d'honneur has been awarded so far only exceptionally (especially to Clint Eastwood in 2009 and Woody Allen in 2002), this award, awarded at the opening ceremony, is now annual and awarded by Festival organizers to a remarkable director who has never received the Palme d'or.

14 April 2011Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux announce at the press conference held, according to the usual practice, at the Grand Hôtel InterContinental in Paris, the list of films selected for the 2011 edition7. 4 May 2011, a few days before the opening of the festival, the film The Artist originally presented out of competition, is integrated in official competition.

18 May 2011During Melancholia's press conference, Lars von Trier made ambiguous comments about the Nazi regime, mainly about Adolf Hitler. He says, among other things: « I say I understand man. He's not really a good guy, but... I feel a little sorry for him. » He then apologized in a statement at the request of the Festival being said « emulated » By these words. On May 19, the Festival declared him persona non grata. His film nevertheless remains in competition, Gilles Jacob specifying « not wanting to sanction a work, but man's words ».

22 May 2011, le palmarès fut dévoilé, et contrairement aux années précédentes, la Palme d’or, The Tree of Life de Terrence Malick ne fit pas l’unanimité (il fut sifflé et applaudit lors de sa projection). Pourtant le film préféré de la presse selon l’agrégateur Le Film français, c’est finalement le film le moins bien noté de la presse et des spectateurs sur Allociné (à l’exception de Footnote). Même résultat en Amérique, les autres films primés ont de meilleures notes que la Palme. Le film de Malick (un réalisateur peu prolifique et très attendu) divisa les festivaliers, les conquis louent un chef-d’œuvre avec une photographie magnifique et un non-formatage Hollywoodien, les adversaires critiquent un film prétentieux avec un aspect New Age.
