For this 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, chaired by actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, the selection of films has particularly highlighted marginal female characters, questioning conventions and traditions. This year's heroines, forcefully affirming their life choices, desires and identities, have marked minds.
The Golden Palm for « Anora » by Sean Baker
The Golden Palm was awarded to « Anora » Sean Baker, a filmmaker of the new American wave known for his poignant portraits of society. In this film, Baker tells the story of a New York prostitute falling in love with the Russian oligarch son. This tragi-comédie, which explores the lowlands of capitalist society, pays tribute to sex workers. « There are thousands of stories to tell in the field of prostitution. These are universal stories and thousands of people can identify with these characters in the world »said Baker at the press conference.
Double Award for Jacques Audiard
Jacques Audiard also shone with his musical « Emilia Perez », which received the jury prize and overall price for female interpretation. This film tells the story of a transgender Mexican cartel leader seeking redemption, with remarkable performances of Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana, Adriana Paz and Karla Sofia Gascon. Addressing the reconciliation between victims and perpetrators of drug trafficking, this film resonates particularly during the electoral period in Mexico.
« The Seeds of the Wild Fig tree » : An Echo to News
The film « The Seeds of the Wild Fig tree » Mohammad Rasoulof, who received the jury's special prize, also generated a great impact. This Iranian family drama involves a father of a family loyal to the Iranian regime, questioned by his daughters. « When religion is associated with political power and patriarchy, it can destroy the most intimate relationships and dignity of people », declared the members of the ecumenical jury.
A Strong Political Message
The presence of Mohammad Rasoulof in Cannes was an event in itself, the director having left Iran clandestinely to avoid a prison sentence. « I have a thought for the members of my team detained in Iran who are under pressure from the Islamic Republic's secret services »he said, stressing the risks faced by Iranian filmmakers. Despite continued repression in Iran, directors like Rasoulof, Jafar Panahi, and others continue to denounce the ravages of totalitarian domination at the risk of their lives.
This 77th edition of the Cannes Festival was marked by strong and committed works, giving a powerful voice to often marginalized characters and themes. The jury's choices reflect a desire to highlight universal stories and contemporary realities, making it possible to Cannes 2024 a memorable and influential edition.
