Cannes Film Festival 2023: The members of the 76th edition jury

The 76th edition of the Cannes Festival will take place from Tuesday 16th to Saturday 27th May. This is the composition of the jury. It was unveiled on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Chaired by Ruben Östlund, the Jury of this 76th edition is composed of French director Julia Ducournau, winner of the Palme d'Or in 2021 for Titane, Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, French actor Denis Ménochet, British-Zambian writer and director Rungano Nyoni, American actress and director Brie Larson, American actor Paul Dano, Afghan writer Atiq Rahimi and Argentine director Damián Szifrón.

Let us discover in detail the course of the jury members who will have the task of choosing the Palme d'or 2023 among the 21 films in competition. The verdict will be announced on 27 May at the closing ceremony.

Ruben Östlund
The 49-year-old Swedish director was appointed President of the Jury in February. He won two Golden Palms at the Cannes Film Festival, with The Square in 2017 and Sans Filtre in 2022. « Ruben Östlund thus digs the path of a provocative dialectic that makes his signature: an initial situation poses the framework for a sociological examination where the low instincts of our humanity have been scrutinized by a corrosive humour »the press release.

 

Julia Ducournau
Julia Ducournau is the second director of the festival's history to have won the Palme d'or in Cannes in 2021, with her film Titane. Prior to the latter, the most violent and disturbing work of the competition, this 37-year-old woman had already made a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with her first feature film, Grave, a learning story from a post-teen cannibal who revisits the horror film.

Maryam Touzani
A 43-year-old Moroccan director and screenwriter, Maryam Touzani directed her first feature film Adam in 2019. She then shot Le Bleu du caftan in 2022, for which she won the Valois de la mise en scène at the French-language film festival in Angoulême. The film was shortlisted for the Oscars.

Denis Ménochet
The Frenchman Denis Ménochet had impressed for his interpretation of Antoine Besson, in the drama Up to the Guard, by Xavier Legrand. The 46-year-old actor also knows American filming sets: one can remember his opening performance of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds in 2009, in which he embodied a farmer hiding Jews during the occupation. More recently, he played under the direction of Wes Anderson in The French Dispatch and is currently on the billboard of Beau Is Afrid, d'Ari Aster. He won the Best Actor Goya 2022 for As Bestas.

Brie Larson
American actress is known worldwide for performing Carol Danvers, alias Captain Marvel in the eponymous film in the film saga Marvel, released in 2019. She was 33 years old and won three years earlier the Oscar for Best Actress in 2016 for the role of Joy Newsome in Room, directed by Lenny Abrahamson. She also played in 2012 in the crazy 21 Jump Street, alongside Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

Paul Dano
We remember his performance of Dwayne, the silent teenager dreaming of being a pilot of the American Air Force, in the road-movie Little Miss Sunshine, released in 2006. Today, 38 years old, he was recently featured in The Fabelmans , Steven Spielberg's film for which he was named to the Oscars. He also played under the leadership of Denis Villeneuve in Prisoners in 2013 and moved on to the production in 2018 with Wildlife.

Rungano Nyoni
Her first feature film I am not a switch had been selected at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, for which she had won awards including the Best Feature Film Award at the International Film Festival of Africa and the Award for the Outstanding Beginning for a Writer at the British Academy Film Awards. 40 years old, born in Zambia, she grew up in Wales. She was noted as an actress in 2009 playing in the short film 20 Questions.

Damian Szifrón
The Argentine director was nominated for the Oscars in 2015 for his film Les Nouveaux Sauvages, which was also in competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. At the age of 47, he just made his fourth feature film in 2023 with Misanthrophe. His work was also rewarded with his television series Los Simuladores (2002).

Atiq Rahimi
Afghan writer and director Atiq Rahimi, 61 years old, adapted his first novel Terre et ash (published in 2000) to cinema in 2004. He won the Goncourt Prize in 2008 for Sungué sapour, a stone of patience, which he will also adapt on large screen in 2012. In 2019, he made his third novel adaptation, this time Notre-Dame du Nile, written by Scholastice Mukasonga.
