Gold Festival for 50 Years
To blow its 50 candles, the Deauville Festival saw things big. 70 American guests will be present alongside many French stars. But it's above all 100 films which will mark this edition, a symbolic figure that pays tribute to the history of this unique festival. Among these films, a selection of 50 timeless masterpieces the cinema will be projected, Virgin Suicides Sofia Coppola, Carrie of Brian de Palma, and A woman under influence John Cassavetes. This retrospective will be accompanied by industry professionals, making film enthusiasts vibrate in the two theatres of the festival, including the famous cinema Morny.
A Film Competition
True to its mission to promote American independent cinema, the festival will host 14 films in competition ( see below) , including 8 first feature films, such as COLOR BOOK David Fortune and THE KNIFE of Nnamdi Asomugha. These works will explore current societal challenges and concerns, with an emphasis on emerging talent. Prices to be awarded include: Grand Prix, Jury Prize, and the Louis Roederer Revelation Foundation Award.
It's close to 108 films competing in the eight categories of the festival. The jury chaired by the actor Benoît Magimel will have the task of separating them. By his side, the actresses Ludivine Sagnier (Lupine, Lola and her brothers), Lou Lampros (My night, In his lifetime) and Emilia Dequenne (Close, Kaamelott), the actor Damien Bonnard (The Miserable, Save or perish), the director, screenwriter, photographer Agathe Riedinger (Raw diamond), as well as the director and screenwriter Martin Bourboulon (The Three Musketeers, Eiffel).
Unforgettable Tributes
Each year, the festival pays tribute to the great figures of American cinema, and 2024 will be no exception. Michael Douglas, for his fifth visit to Deauville, will receive an Honour Award for his outstanding career. In addition, two female icons of cinema, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams, each will receive one Deauville Talent Award, marking their unique contribution to the big screen.
The edition will also be marked by the arrival of Francis Ford Coppola, which will present its highly anticipated film Megalopolis, while James Gray will animate a Master class and be given a complete retrospective of his work.
A Festival of Colors of the Future
Jérôme Lasserre, Director of Programming, highlighted the objective of the festival of « Looking ahead ». This year, Photo exhibition tracing the 50 years of the festival's history will be installed on the CID terraces, with more than 200 photographs taken from the festival archives.
In addition, a new generation of emerging players will be highlighted with prices, such as the New Hollywood awarded to Daisy Ridley, Sebastian Stan, and Mikey Madison, the latter having shone in the film Anora by Sean Baker, Palme d'Or of the Cannes 2024 Festival.
Continuity with Cannes
As every year, the Deauville Festival will feature screenings of award-winning films at the Cannes Film Festival. Among them, the very moving Most precious of goods by Michel Hazanavicius, projected as part of the Time of the Croisette. This partnership between Deauville and Cannes extends the magic of cinema and offers a new window on the films that marked the Croisette.
