The new film of Asghar Farhadi in opening!
The director of the "Passé" will open the competition at the 71st Cannes Festival, with his new film, "Everybody Knows". Here are the latest news before the press conference to be held on Thursday, April 12.
If the 71st Cannes Festival does not start until May 8. Until Thursday 12 April, the day when Thierry Frémaux, the general delegate, will unveil the official selection, this is what has already been unveiled.
Everybody Knows, the eighth feature film by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, presented as a psychological thriller, will open the Festival. It should be noted that he will appear in competition, which was not the case for all the opening films in the past. The casting, composed of the couple Penelope Cruz – Javier Bardem and the Argentine superstar Ricardo Darín, promises a beautiful climb of the steps.
The film will be released in France the day after the screening on May 9.
Asghar Farhadi has already competed twice in Cannes, for the past in 2013 (female interpretation prize for Berenice Bejo), and the customer 2016 (Scenario Award and Men's Interpretation Award for Shahab Hosseini).
Edward Baer as Master of Ceremonies
Edward Baer, third. The director and actor had already been the master of the opening and closing ceremonies in 2008 and 2009, and now he is re-employing for this 71 edition. It'll probably be less glamorous than Monica Bellucci, who was officiating last year, but maybe more fun. You are also given an excerpt from the broadcaster's press release, Canal+, which sets the tone: « This year again, he agreed to donate his magnificent person to the greatest glory of the world cinema, having nothing to gain in this operation, if not some consistent roles in extremely qualitative films. »
We know the presidents of the various juries.
If we knew since the beginning of January that Cate Blanchett will be the president of the competition jury , the other presidents have been announced recently: Ursula Meier, the director of Home de L, will be surrounded by six other professionals to choose the Golden Camera, which rewards the best first work presented in the Official Selection, at Critical Week or at the Directors' Fortnight; Benicio del Toro will have to officer him on the selection.« singular and original works in their purpose and aesthetics ».
Composed of 5 women and 4 men, the jury chaired by actress Cate Blanchett will also include Chinese actor Chang Chen, American screenwriter Ava DuVernay, Burundian singer Khadja Nin and Russian director Andrei Zviaguintsev
Scorsese at the Fortnight, Christopher Nolan at Cannes Classics
Beautiful battle of heads displayed between the Official Selection and the Directors' Fortnight. While the movie-goers were already looking forward to seeing Christopher Nolan present a new 70 mm copy of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, 2001, Space Odyssey, before making a masterclass (on May 12), here is that the Fortnight, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, arrives with another superstar: nothing less than Martin Scorsese. It will be present on May 9, at the opening, for a projection of Mean Streets (révélé à la Quinzaine 1974), une « conversation », puis la remise du Carosse d’or, prix remis à un réalisateur ayant marqué l’histoire du cinéma.
